Staff Motivation and Retention

Issue: Despite the fact that our people are professionals hired to provide a paid service, they are also human and working in a demanding environment. From time to time, their natural enthusiasm can wane, bruised by monotony, pressure and lack of sufficient success. Research shows that lowly-motivated people can be as low as a tenth as productive as highly motivated ones. That’s expensive in itself, but add to that the cost of replacing those who have had enough and leave, or the damage to those who fall ill under the stress and clearly, poor motivation is a real danger.

Approach: Motivation - the application of one’s efforts to achieving a goal - is often spoken about in the same terms as high morale. This is an illusion - the two are actually opposing forces. Another confusion comes from the universal suggestion that managers can motivate people. This is untrue, because people make choices based on agendas. The skilful motivators will recognise these truths and use them to get the best out of his people. The trick is job satisfaction, but as a means, not an end.

I can help: I can train your managers in the truth of motivation - but I can also show your staff how to exercise their professionalism.
